Why Grow Specialty Canola?
Forget what you've heard — we're setting the facts straight on these specialty canola myths.
Managing a specialty IP program takes a lot of extra work.
Modern farming already requires record-keeping of crop inventories and locations. Tracking specialty canola is easily managed as its own unique crop on the farm.
Specialty canola yields aren’t as good as commodity, so any premiums you may get are negated by lower yields.
Modern specialty canola hybrids like VICTORY and InVigor® Health yield like commercial varieties. So you can achieve comparable yields while earning a higher premium over commodity.
It’s a big risk to grow a specialty IP canola. If the oil quality is out of spec, it won’t meet the standards and I won’t get paid the premium.
Modern specialty canola varieties are bred for stability in oil quality. Although oil quality rejection can happen, the actual 5-year average shows that less than 1% of initial samples are rejected, usually due to sampling error or mixing of products. The final rejection rate is much lower after resampling and/or on the driveway.
Specialty IP canola is more prone to downgrading due to green seed or other quality issues.
VICTORY and InVigor Health canola hybrids are no more likely to have green seed or other quality issues than commercial canola. Frost, drought, sunlight availability or intensity and other environmental factors affect specialty canola in the same way they affect commercial canola. Balancing our portfolio of seed varieties with mid- to long-season options helps farmers manage the risk and reward of earlier versus later varieties.
All specialty IP canola programs are basically the same.
The value proposition of specialty canola programs differs greatly depending on the company offering them. Looking beyond the initial premium to evaluate all program attributes and tools can help farmers find the right fit for their operation.
